I’ve founded, led, and invested in a variety of tech and social impact ventures.
I serve on the boards of several public companies in private equity, REITs, and banking.
I’ve been privileged to serve on the board of directors for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, overseeing Washington Dulles International Airport and Ronald Reagan National Airports, which serve over 40 million traveling customers annually and generate nearly $1b in revenue.
As an entrepreneur and one-time angel investor, I’ve experienced the joys of developing new ways to solve old problems, of seeing ideas succeed beyond my wildest expectations, and the disappointment when products, teams and ideas fail in ways I didn’t imagine possible. The upside is that every experience has caused me to grow.
I’m a contributor at Business Insider, Entrepreneur.com, and SUCCESS Magazine.
What motivates me?
Using business and our careers as a force for good
I believe that businesses can be a force for good in the world. Among the best moments in my life have been the times when a team member said they’d been able to buy their first home, or send a child to college because of a business that I’d helped launch or manage.
I’ve seen firsthand what happens when a company invests in and partners with nonprofits in communities where it does business. In addition to my work as an entrepreneur and investor, I co-founded the webMethods Foundation, which mentored employees to form grant review teams that provided grants to entrepreneurial nonprofits and improved the lives of low-income families in the Washington, DC region.
I’m also on the Advisory Board of The Global Good Fund, which provides leadership development for young social entrepreneurs across the globe.
My family
I love adventure in both my work and personal life. I’ve been married to my husband, Phillip, for 25 years, and we have two sons. With family in Australia, England, and the Western U.S., we travel extensively! Among our favorite trips were those to Kenya and Uganda to support entrepreneurs with innovative micro-enterprises. We also travelled with our two sons to Madagascar to support entrepreneurial leaders (in education, church-planting and micro-enterprise) in the world’s 6th poorest country.
In our free time, we love to sail on our catamaran, “Glad In It,” especially in the U.S. Virgin Islands and other parts of the Caribbean (where we are now actively involved in supporting this region which was devastated by hurricanes.)
If you want to make a significant impact in the world and grow yourself, your team, and your business, my hope is that the ideas in this blog will help you get there – further and faster with proven strategies derived from my own experiences, the latest discoveries in behavioral economics, psychology, and marketing. Bold, accelerated growth is possible when you recognize and seize the opportunities all around you.
