Caren Merrick’s path began far from the boardroom. Raised in Southern California, she became the first woman in her family to earn a college degree, putting herself through UCLA.
She went on to co-found webMethods, helping build it from startup to a global public software company while experiencing firsthand the challenges of rapid growth, innovation, building teams, raising capital, and navigating uncertainty. The webMethods technology continues today and is known as IBM webMethods.
Caren also co-founded and chaired the webMethods Foundation, an early model of employee-engaged philanthropy. Team members were trained to serve on grantmaking teams, investing in entrepreneurial nonprofits that expanded education, job training, and economic opportunity for families in underserved communities.
She later served on public and private company boards, invested in and advised growing businesses, and served as Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade, leading 13 agencies. During her tenure, the Commonwealth secured more than $140 billion in announced capital investment and was named America’s Top State for Business by CNBC.
